Microbiology laboratory strengthening is mandatory in the context of TB clinical trials given the crucial role they play in determining patient eligibility for enrolment and generating data on key outcomes.

Dr. Gabriela Torrea, Senior Scientist and Analytical Project Manager at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) Mycobacteriology Unit, drew on her experience at ITM, which functions as a central and coordinating laboratory for several TB clinical trials, including the STREAM clinical trial.

Dr. Torrea provided an overview of guidelines governing key aspects of good clinical practice for laboratories, and infrastructure requirements for laboratories to conduct clinical trials. Dr. Torrea discussed solutions for commonly encountered challenges faced by laboratories conducting clinical trials and provided advice regarding how best to strengthen physical and human resource capacity.
